Jermain Defoe and the Rangers transfer advice he handed out to new Ibrox recruit

New Rangers signing Rabbi Matondo says former Light Blues forward Jermain Defoe has handed him some advice on what to expect in Glasgow.

The Welsh international has joined Rangers from Bundesliga side Schalke after a successful loan spell at Belgian club Cercle Brugge last season. He joined the Germans in 2019 from Manchester City for a fee of around £11 million and leaves a year before his contract expiry date. Defoe retired earlier this year after a stellar playing career ended with league title joy in Glasgow and a brief Sunderland return.

He's still got Govan on his mind and alongside former loanee Aaron Ramsey, has been on hand to dish out Rangers tips. Matondo told Rangers TV: "I heard a bit from Aaron at the Wales camp. He had high praise for the club and how everything is here. I’ve heard from elsewhere like Jermain Defoe. He’s told me all about it.

"Big names in the game have been here and experienced it so it’s only right I give it a chance myself and make great memories here.

"When I heard about the interest it was always something I’d consider because of the magnitude of the club and the fans and history.

"It was a great moment to sign and hopefully we can get to more finals like the Europa League final or Champions League and in Scotland as well. I’m excited for it all."
