Jeremy Renner was trying to protect his nephew from being injured when he was crushed by a snow plough on New Year’s Day, according to a report by local authorities.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office state that the 52-year-old Marvel actor’s PistenBully snowcat vehicle began sliding sideways after he used it to pull the truck, near his home in Nevada, when he was pulled under and crushed.

The parking break was not engaged and would have stopped the snowcat vehicle, which runs on a track, as it started sliding sideways after the Mayor of Kingstown star used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of snow, informs the redacted legal document which was filed last Friday.

“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” reads the conclusion of the report, which CNN obtained Tuesday through a public records request.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

The brake indicator light inside the snowcat’s cab was not functioning, and “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident,” the report also notes.

The report goes on to reveal that his nephew was able to help Renner until further assistance arrived. He was then airlifted to the hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks, undergoing at least two surgeries and being treated in the intensive care unit.

Renner himself has said that he broke more than 30 bones.

Uploading an image of him receiving physiotherapy on social media, he captioned the snap: “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …

“Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.

“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I. Much love and appreciation to you all.

“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all,” he concluded.
