Jeremy Renner was “completely crushed” by a snow plough in an accident near his Nevada home on Sunday, his 911 call log has revealed.

The actor, best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel franchise, can be heard moaning in the background on the call and he was also said to have “extreme difficulty” breathing, with his chest collapsed and torso crushed.

The Bourne Legacy, Wind River and Mission Impossible star was run over by a 6,500kg plough while clearing roads and was airlifted to hospital.

Officers with the Washoe County police department said earlier this week at a press conference that Renner was helping a family member get their car out from heavy snow Sunday with the plough.

The actor got out of the vehicle to chat with the family member, and the vehicle started to roll, crushing Renner.

A witness told online tabloid TMZ that one of Renner’s neighbours, a doctor, helped to stem his heavily bleeding leg until paramedics arrived.

In a selfie from his hospital bed earlier this week, Renner posted on Instagram: “Thank you all for your kind words.

“I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.” The post was accompanied by a picture of Renner hooked up to a wire and looking bruised.

In a statement on Monday, relatives of Renner confirmed the actor suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries”.

They said he had undergone surgery for his injuries and thanked fans and those looking after him for their messages and acts of support.

Officers this week also called the incident a “tragic accident”, saying the sheriff’s office was investigating a possible fault in the snow plough.

The region of Washoe County has experienced heavy snowstorms over Christmas and New Year, with some 10,000 residents losing power.
