Jeremy Renner is celebrating his birthday in hospital this year as he continues to recover from a horror snow plough accident.

The Hawkeye star, who turned 52 on Saturday, spent his big day in an ICU unit, but still made sure to thank people for their birthday tributes.

Jeremy's Avengers co-star Chris Evans took to Instagram to share a special message for his friend.

Posting a black and white picture of the two of them laughing, 41-year-old Chris wrote: "Happy birthday to one of the toughest guys I know! Sending so much love your way."

Jeremy also reposted a video on social media from youth organisation The Base Chicago, who he volunteers with, after they recorded a video for him.

"Thank you Renowned Medical ICU team for beginning this journey," he wrote in the caption.

Jeremy was airlifted to hospital following the serious incident at the weekend.

Local police said that the actor was helping a family member free a car from heavy snow, when he was accidentally run over by his own six-tonne ploughing machine.

A 911 call, obtained by TMZ, indicated that Jeremy's chest collapsed and his upper torso crushed as he also experienced heavy bleeding from his head.
