East Ayrshire Council’s ambassador in the campaign to end violence against women has blasted Jeremy Clarkson as a ‘pathetic excuse of man’ for comments about Meghan Markle.
The former Top Gear presenter sparked outrage in his column in the Sun, writing that he ‘hated her on a cellular level’ and wanted to see excrement thrown at her while being made to parade naked in the street.
Clarkson later made an attempt at contrition, falling short of an apology.
The comments came just days after the international 16 days of action against gender based violence came to an end.
SNP Councillor Jim McMahon, who is the council’s Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland as well as depute leader, said: “I will take every opportunity to call out men who think it is okay to make misogynistic comments with absolutely no regard to the wider implications of their comments.
“What an absolute pathetic excuse of man Jeremy Clarkson is.
“I campaign on an annual basis to highlight violence against women and girls in all its forms.”
He said Clarkson’s comment ‘undermines the serious message White Ribbon Scotland delivers’.
“The irony here is,” he said, “articles like this feed into violence against women and girls.”
He said it would be hypocritical for the paper to print articles on a female who is the victim of ‘coercive, controlling behaviour or even death at the hands of a man.
“Shame on you.”
