Jeremie Frimpong post Celtic rise continues with Bayer Leverkusen top award

Jeremie Frimpong's impressive post Celtic rise has continued as he is named Bayer Leverkusen's player of the season by supporters.

The right-back starred for Die Werkself this season, scoring the last of his nine goals in the Europa League quarter-final clash with Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.

His tally leaves him second behind Moussa Diaby, who bagged 14 goals in the 2022/23 campaign, with Frimpong also picking up 11 assists under Xabi Alonso.

Bayer fans were given the opportunity to vote for their player of the season once again, having named Czech Republic international Patrik Schick the star man last term.

And of the 4,980 votes, Frimpong landed 30.7 per cent of the votes ahead of Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich, as his career after his two-year Parkhead stint continues to impress.

The 22-year-old has played over 7,000 minutes across 95 appearances since swapping the Premiership for the Bundesliga in January 2021, and has been linked with several big money moves after bursting onto the scene in Germany.

Labelled the "wizard on the wing" by Leverkusen, Frimpong was last reported to be 'on the brink' of a move to Manchester United, with Erik Ten Haag's Red Devils showing interest in the youngster.

He joined Celtic from Manchester City in 2019 for £300,000, before being sold for £11.5million, and interest has left Hoops supporters looking at potential windfall cash from any future moves for the Dutch-born star.

Frimpong's Player of the Season trophy is due to be presented as usual at the season launch.
