Jenny Powell forced to drive from Manchester to London after train strike to pay tribute to dad

Jenny Powell updated followers on her Instagram as she embarked on a 'three generations road trip' with her mum Myra and her eldest daughter Connie. The former Wheel of Fortune and Gimme 5 star and her family were forced to travel from Manchester to London for a Prostate Cancer UK event by car following rail strikes.

They made the journey in tribute to Jenny's dad, Leslie, who they lost to prostate cancer at the age of 93 in July last year. Following his death Jenny paid an emotional tribute to 'the most beautiful soul and father.'

The trio climbed into the car with six bananas and three bottles of water for the trip after Jenny launched the This Is Manchester awards at a breakfast held at the Dakota hotel. "This is where the road trip begins," she said into the camera on her Instagram Stories.

"There's me, Connie and my 89-year-old mum starting at the This Is Manchester awards launch and then we're going to drive to London thanks to the strike and end up in the West End somewhere for Prostate Cancer UK," Jenny explained.

She added: "I'll let you know how three generations get on in Connie's Polo from Manchester to London." Jenny later told fans: "We're now down the M62 so far so good in the Polo. Six bananas and three bottles of water. Not much traffic so fingers crossed."

Later as they stopped for a break proud grandmother Myra declared that Connie, 21, deserves 'a gold star' for her driving. "We're on schedule, we're on the M6 somewhere. So far traffic isn't bad at all," said Jenny.

And as they arrived about five hours later Jenny cheered triumphantly: "No way. Yes way!" Jenny previously said about her dad: "This family man is an example to us all ... love your family like nothing else and dad I will miss you every single day, every single hour ... I love you."

Jenny will be hosting the This Is Manchester Awards, championing the region's talent, with former Love Island star and Manchester entrepreneur Scott Thomas. The awards return on Thursday November 3 at the Hilton Hotel in Deansgate after a two year hiatus due to Covid restrictions and will be attended by celebs, sports personalities and leading businesses across Greater Manchester.

Scott said: "It’s honestly a privilege to be asked to co-host the awards this year alongside the amazing Jenny Powell. I’ve attended the awards before as a guest and it really is a special celebration of Manchester in all its glory I’m so proud to be from this city and this is without a doubt a personal career highlight for me. Roll on the 3rd November!”

And Jenny gushed: “I am so proud and delighted to be part of TIMA and all it stands for. Manchester has a dynamic that I haven’t experienced anywhere else in the world.

"It has an energy, a warmth , a unique culture and huge resilience and creativity. It's all about the people and I can’t wait to celebrate with those people and their businesses who have helped the city become one of the most loved and admired on a global scale. It’s an honour to be a part of TIMA once again!”
