Fashion's current obsession is the 2024 Met Gala, which is set to hit the red carpet on May 6. A Vogue-exclusive event, the magazine's famed editor Anna Wintour has selected the one and only Jennifer Lopez to host the star-studded fashion fest, which attracts every mega A-lister under the sun. There's just one small problem, J.Lo is struggling with what to wear according to an article in Music Times. The official dress code for this year is "The Garden of Time" — which as is always the case with the annual Met Gala— is a theme tied to the unveiling of the latest exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion."
Admitting in a Vogue Instagram post that she's "still deciding" on her outfit, J.Lo added she has "a few different sketches" to choose from and that she is the kind of woman "who chooses at the last minute." Ironic given most of the celebs plan their outlandish outfits months in advance. Though we doubt the world's top designers and stylists aren't rushing to dress the superstar singer and actress.
"I like choices and then I go, 'Okay, this is how I feel today,' and I will try to create some type of amazing look," Lopez stated expressing the pressure she felt to make a major style statement at the iconic event which she described as "the night for looks". She also acknowledged what a big deal the invitation to play host was, saying, "You know, Anna [Wintour] calls and asks you to host the Met Gala with her...It's kind of the biggest night in fashion and to raise money for the museum."
Lopez will share co-chair duties with Zendaya (who skipped last year's event but who we expect will slay on the red carpet given how on fire she is right now), Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Wintour. The Vogue EIC— who has a reputation for being an ice queen and who was portrayed as such by Meryl Streep in the hit film "The Devil Wears Prada"— is a longstanding trustee of The Metropolitan Museum, and has been its glamorous face since 1995. Lopez meanwhile is a long-time attendee of the gala and considers it a"real honor" to be a co-chair this year, admitting it's "a nice thing to be a part of."
The Met Gala, formerly known as The Met Ball, debuted in 1948 and is considered the fashion industry's answer to the Oscars. To date, the benefit has raised over $223.5 million for the museum's Costume Institute, which last year paid tribute to the iconic Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld who died in 2019. 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty', the name of the 2023 exhibit and theme for the gala will go down in fashion history as one of the best. Lopez honored Lagerfeld, (along with his beloved Birman cat Choupette) in a Ralph Lauren velvet and sateen halter dress set off with a black fascinator and dramatic black cat eyes.
Kudos must also go to Jared Leto (who is rumored to be playing Lagerfeld in an upcoming biopic) who rocked up to the red carpet in a life-size catsuit in homage to Choupette. Incidentally, despite reports that Choupette (the real cat) was actually flying in for the event, he announced on his Instagram page (yep he has his own Insta with 264K followers) that he "preferred to stay peacefully & cozy at home. We pay tribute to my Daddy every day since his parting and we are very moved to see one more day dedicated to him."
J.Lo can be forgiven for not yet landing on her final look for the Met Gala, it's a serious deal and she's feeling the fashion hangxiety. The star has also had quite a busy year. In February she released her ninth album, "This Is Me... Now: A Love Story", which she wrote, directed, and produced, and starred in a documentary based on the record (and her life as a serial romantic), "The Greatest Love Story Never Told".
The 2024 Met Gala will be held on May 6 — it's always the first Monday in May —at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the style and celebrity extravaganza will be live-streamed by Vogue.
