After becoming the most successful star on Netflix thanks to the phenomenon of "Wednesday," Jenna Ortega returns with another iconic role created especially for her. She is Astrid, the daughter of Lydia, the character interpreted by Winona Ryder in "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice," the second installment of director Tim Burton's iconic film.
Ortega and Ryder are the main characters in the trailer released today. It confirms the film's premiere for September 6 of this year and begins with Astrid riding through town on a bicycle on her way to what appears to be a funeral. At the cemetery, she meets her mother and grandmother.
Then, Astrid finds the model in which Beetlejuice lives in the attic, as happens in the first film, until Lydia awakens the ghost again, played by Michael Keaton.
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators of the Ortega-starring Netflix series "Wednesday," wrote the script for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." It seems fair to say the Latina actress is their muse.
Of the original cast, Michael Keaton returned as Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse, while Ryder and Catherine O'Hara reprised their roles as Lydia and Delia Deetz, respectively.
Astrid by Jenna Ortega
Ortega described her character as "weird, but in a different way and not in the same way you'd assume," she told Vanity Fair . "I wouldn't say she's bright and sunny at all. She doesn't go to the opposite end of the spectrum, but any kid who becomes a teenager wants to be removed from their parents," she explained.
"I think they instantly just fight whatever it is that their parent loves. So I think it's a little bit of that. I'm not wearing pink and a cheerleader, but I am a little bit against my mom's history or past. We butt heads quite a bit."
Ortega's character is one of the new additions to the latest story of one of cinema's most famous ghosts. Another is his father, Rory, played by Justin Theroux, who is known for starring in the HBO series "The Leftovers" and being Jennifer Anniston's ex-husband. Willem Dafoe, Italian actress Monica Bellucci, and British actor Arthur Conti are also newcomers to the story.
"I feel like studios nowadays, of course they want people in seats and you've got to do reboots or sequels or things like that to get people entwined, but to bring 'Beetlejuice' back -- of all of the stories -- is so good because people need to revisit weird, strange, off-putting stories again," she said. "We need to introduce the younger generation that's always on the phone to new artistic and creative ideas."
"The weirder you get with it, the more people you can get to see it, I think will probably do a lot for film in general," she added.
The juice is loose
The first 1988 Beetlejuice followed the recently deceased Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin), who enlisted the help of the mischievous demon Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse (Keaton), to drive out the current residents of their home, the Deetz family.
The sequel continues decades later with a death in the family. "That's all I'll say," Burton said in an interview. "There's something that happens that sets things in motion." Could it be Lydia's father, Charles Deetz's (Jeffrey Jones's) death? The director is coy: "We'll see."
That is exactly what you see in the trailer, which leaves no doubt that Beetlejuice is coming back into play.
