The Tennessee Titans made sure to get their biggest priority of the offseason out of the way by agreeing to a four-year, $94 million contract extension with star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons.
This was a massive sigh of relief for Titans fans everywhere because they no longer have to worry about being blindsided at any moment similarly to the way they were with A.J. Brown last year.
Truthfully, it was hard to envision a realistic scenario where they actually moved on from Simmons, but after last year’s debacle, you can’t blame the fanbase for being uneasy until the contract was signed.
Thankfully, that officially happened yesterday, and today we are learning some more details about how the contract was structured.
According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the extension with Simmons is going to save the Titans $4 million in cap space in 2023.
He was set to account for approximately $10.753 million on the books with the fifth-year option, but that cap hit has now been reduced to just $6.573 million for the 2023 season.
Which means the cap number is $6.753 million. #Titans https://t.co/UbyVReKZON

And with that reduction in Simmons’ 2023 cap hit, Tennessee now has about $11 million in cap space, per Over the Cap. Here’s a look at the full yearly breakdown of the deal.
Simmons’ cap hit balloons to around $23 million in 2024, but the good news is the Titans are set to be flush with cap space next year, helping them better absorb it.
It will be interesting to see how general manager Ran Carthon approaches these next few months, but fortunately we don’t have to worry about Simmons being stolen from us for the foreseeable future.
