Before signing a four-year, $94 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was actually looking for a shorter contract.
Per Nick Kieser of 102.5 The Game, Simmons’ agent, Paul DeRousselle, admitted he was looking for a three-year deal for his client, but general manager Ran Carthon wasn’t having it.
“I told Ran [Carthon] three years but he said ‘hell nah,’” DeRousselle said.
It’s understandable why Carthon wasn’t into it, as that deal would’ve meant Simmons would be up for another presumably big contract extension one year earlier and going into his age 30 season (2027).
Instead, Simmons is now locked up through 2027 when you include him playing on the fifth-year option in 2023. That means there’s a better chance Simmons will cost less once his current contract is up.

While Simmons’ extension doesn’t officially kick in until 2024, the deal is going to pay dividends immediately for Tennessee’s salary cap space, as the contract reduces his 2023 cap hit by $4 million, giving the Titans around $11 million in cap space ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.
