Jeff Van Gundy reportedly interviewed for an assistant gig with the Boston Celtics

Former NBA head coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy interviewed with the Boston Celtics about joining the team’s staff as an assistant coach according to recent reporting from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. Per the SI reporter, “Van Gundy, a cost-cutting casualty at ESPN last week, has been actively exploring a return to coaching.”

“(The) Dallas (Mavericks) and Boston discussed roles with Van Gundy before beefing up their coaching staffs,” added Mannix, referencing the Celtics bringing on former Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee, ex-Philadelphia 76ers assistant Sam Cassell and Duke assistant Amile Jefferson to help flesh out head coach Joe Mazzulla’s bench after a number of departures spanning two offseasons.

The Celtics might yet hire another assistant or two to round out their bench behind Mazzulla. For now, it seems Boston is done picking assistants of Van Gundy’s stature — look for younger prospects for any further Boston assistant hires, if any.
