Jeff Stelling gives Conor Coady unlikely new title after Everton beat Southampton

Jeff Stelling has given Everton centre-back Conor Coady an unlikely title after Frank Lampard's side picked up an away win at Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints had initially led via a goal from Joe Aribo early in the second half but the game was turned on its head when Coady swept home Amadou Onana's square knockdown to pull the sides level, before Dwight McNeil smashed in the winner two minutes later.

Coady's strike was his first for his new club after seeing a close-range effort at Goodison Park ruled offside on a VAR review against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby last month.

But there was no denying the St Helens-born defender this time - and veteran sports broadcaster Stelling was quick to lavish praise on Everton's centre-back after he grabbed the equaliser.

Speaking on his Saturday afternoon Sky Sports show, Stelling said: “Conor Coady. Goal Machine. Got four Premier League goals last season. He’s on the mark this season.”

Everton's victory secured back-to-back wins for only the second time since Frank Lampard joined the club in January, moving the Blues up to 11th in the Premier League table. They are also now unbeaten in six matches.

After the match, Coady revealed how the Toffees have been working hard on getting most out of dead ball situations. He told BBC Sport: "My eyes lit up a little bit at the back post when I saw it pop down.

"It was important we got it and that we bounced back pretty quickly from going behind. We work a lot on second-phase set-pieces, trying to make sure we do them right, so it’s pleasing when something like that comes off for us."
