Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday will have to go through the entire interview process if he wants to be the one leading the team after the 2022 season, and it appears that’s exactly what he plans to do.
Coming out of the bye week, Saturday was asked if he still wants to be a head coach. He confirmed that Tuesday, and made it clear he plans on interviewing for the role as long as the Colts will have him.
“Yeah, I plan on interviewing. As long as they give me the interview, I’m in,” Saturday said. “But yeah, I enjoy the heck out of this and have had a lot of fun doing it. I’m not discouraged at all. I know I have a vision of what this could look like into the future, plan to work that way. That’s what I do every day, is work towards that goal understanding what that looks like.”
Saturday won’t have the amount of experience other coaches will have when it comes to interview process. He has certainly shown he can be a strong leader, which is a massive quality a head coach must possess.
But it’s also clear he’s still learning the ropes of everything that goes into being a head coach. We’ve seen him go through growing pains when it comes to clock management and decisions in crunch time, but those were expected.
But Saturday has enjoyed the change of pace and wants to continue doing so for the Colts in 2023.
“I’m not wavering man. I’ve loved it. I’ve had a great time. I know I’m the most popular guy in the room right now, right? This has been fantastic. It’s crazy for me because I went from being in the media to not paying any attention purposely,” Saturday said. “I’m sure not everything written about us or me is positive. I’m good with that. I knew kind of what I was signing up for.”
The Colts will have to go through the entire interviewing process, which includes the Rooney Rule guidelines. That’s something they didn’t have to do when naming an interim head coach following the firing of Frank Reich.
It also will be interesting to see if the Colts retain general manager Chris Ballard, who is certainly on the hot seat after a disastrous campaign.
Regardless, we should expect Saturday to be among the group of candidates to interview for the vacant head coach position this offseason.
