Jeff Bezos met with audible groans after donating $500,000 at charity gala

You won’t need us to tell you that Jeff Bezos is a very, very rich man.

The 57-year-old American entrepreneur is the founder of Amazon and, according to Forbes, has an estimated net worth of around $203 billion. So, it’s fair to say that he’s got a spare bit of change lying around.

That’s why Bezos has again found himself being painted as a villain last weekend when he attended the star-studded Baby 2 Baby charity fundraising gala in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Baby 2 Baby is a charity that raises money for children living in poverty and many of the guests were digging into their pockets to donate to this worthwhile cause.

However, according to Page Six, Bezos was met with audible groans from the crowd at Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood after he donated just $500,000.

A source told the publication: “Everyone was waiting for him [Bezos] to donate something but he didn’t. Then someone donated a million dollars. And then a little later, [Bezos] donated $500,000. There was an audible groan from the room.”

“If someone else can donate a million, Jeff Bezos can donate more than a million,” the insider added.

Now you might think that $500k is still a lot of money regardless of where it’s coming from but that’s before you factor in that Bezos reportedly makes around $142,667 per minute. Which mean he more than likely made most of that money back by the time he would have taken him to return to his table.

Bezos has been a bit more generous with his money elsewhere. Two weeks ago, at the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow, he pledged to donate $2 billion towards nature conservation and improving food systems worldwide. This comes off the back of the $10bn that he donated to start the Bezos Earth Fund last year, which was the single biggest charity donation in American in 2020.

indy100 has contacted Bezos for comment.
