Jeff Bezos makes a major 'emotional' decision

Jeff Bezos has more than a few irons in the fire right now, and one is really heating up.

The founder of Amazon AMZN, Blue Origin, Bezos Expeditions, and owner of the Washington Post has been keeping busy despite handing over reigns of Amazon to Andy Jassy in 2021.

And given one of Bezos' most recent pricey purchases, he's about to be in charge of something else a little more personal.

Back in mid-October, the Amazon founder completed the purchase of his very own billionaire bunker in Florida. Bezos reportedly bought the $79 million mansion on the manmade island of Indian Creek, just months after buying the property next door for $68 million.

The seven-bedroom, 14-bathroom Mediterranean style villa is set just offshore of Miami and is 19,064-square-feet (1,771 sq. m.) on just under two acres of waterfront property.

It features Brazilian teak docks that can actually fit a yacht 100 feet long or more. His current yacht, the Koru, on which he's been sailing around the Mediterranean, is 417 feet long, so that still could be a tight squeeze.

The villa also features:

  • Sauna
  • Pool
  • Theater
  • Library
  • Maid's quarters
  • Fireplaces
  • Marble flooring
  • Wine cellar
  • 6 covered garage spaces
  • Ocean access

Given all this glitzy new space, it seems Bezos is too comfortable to leave.

Jeff Bezos makes a major decision

And now, according to the billionaire CEO himself, Bezos plans to make this new move permanent.

"My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of ’82 — GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami," he wrote in an emotional Instagram post on Thursday night. "Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. For all that, I’m planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest."

"I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here," he added. "As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart."

Bezos isn't the only one moving to Florida.

In 2022, 318,855 people relocated to Florida alone. Many of those folks are from northern states associated with a higher cost of living and colder climes.

In cities with 150,000 households or more, Florida metropolitan areas such as Ocala, Tallahassee, Deltona and Miami were included in the list of the top 10 cities in the U.S. with the highest 2022 immigration rates, at over 55%, according to USPS data.

Indian Creek, for its part, is known to be a particularly tony area.

Known among smaller circles as "billionaire bunker," it's been home to notable folks including Carl Icahn, Tom Brady, Julio Iglesias, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Others: the Brazilian model Adriana Lima, the hedge-fund billionaire Edward Lampert and the former Philadelphia Eagles owner Norman Braman.

And it probably won't take long for Jeff Bezos to become a familiar face. The Indian Creek population was reported as just 84 people as of 2020. Make that at least 85, now.
