The brother of indie filmmaker Jeff Baena has spoken out following his tragic and untimely death, telling a friend he is “broken”.
Brad Baena left a comment under an Instagram post made by Jeff’s friend Adam Pally.
“I am broken,” he wrote.
The comment came after Pally’s heartfelt tribute to Jeff’s family.
“An overly gracious host with an almost disturbing open-door policy, a film encyclopedia, and most importantly to me a friend,” he wrote.
“As a director Jeff strove for truth. Nothing could sound, look or feel inauthentic, and that is a direct representation of who Jeff was. Authentic. You never worried that Jeff wasn’t telling you the way it is. Cause Jeff’s virtue was telling you the way it was.
“My heart breaks for my friend Aubrey [Plaza] and the Baena family and for all of us who spent time on his sets or at his house or in his orbit. Thanks for believing in me Jeff, may your memory be a blessing.”
Baena, 47, was known for hits like Life After Beth and The Little Hours — which both starred his wife and long-time collaborator Aubrey Plaza. The pair had dated since 2011, and were married in 2021.
According to the Los Angeles medical examiner, Baena died at about 10.39am local time on Friday morning, concluding that he had taken his own life.
Baena is survived by his wife Plaza, mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, dad Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena and stepsister and stepbrother Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
In a statement provided to Deadline, the family have expressed their devastation and asked for privacy during a difficult time.
