Jedward say they've received death threats over controversial anti-monarchy Tweets

Pop duo Jedward have claimed they’ve received death threats over comments they made about the monarchy after the Queen’s death last week.

Their anti-monarchy stance has earned them a barrage of aggressive messages, which the pair claim are attempts to ‘intimidate’ them.

The identical twins, 27, who rose to fame after appearing on ITV ’s The X Factor in 2009, took a controversial stance as Queen Elizabeth's death broke across the world.

Now John and Edward Grimes have said they have been sent death threats due to their controversial Tweets calling for the monarchy to be abolished.

The twins shared: “Psychos are sending us death threats! Your threatening behaviour and criminality will not intimidate us.” (sic).

Many tried to reason with the musicians, telling them their Tweets about the Royal Family were inappropriate at a time when the nation is in mourning.

"I'm not p****d about you hating britain or royal family. But you two of all people should know how that family is feeling. Strip the titles away just like you they have lost their mother, thats when i find you disrespectful. You know the pain of loosing your mother."

Another criticised: "You got exactly what you wanted. You've had more interactions and publicity with this than anything else you've done recently."

But some fans responded, sending support saying it was uncalled for them to receive such level of abuse from trolls.

One follower responded: “I don’t agree with the timing & content of some your tweets & I understand why people are cross but threatening you like this is beyond awful. I hope you’ve reported them & that you’re ok.”

Another added: "Royalists going after some real Kings. Some people have no shame. Stay strong and safe."

However some tried to reason with the Irish musicians.

The Irish pair called for the end of the monarchy after the Queen's death was announced by Buckingham Palace.

They Tweeted: “Abolish the monarchy and give the people real democracy!”

In a separate tweet, posted on Saturday 10 September, they added: “King Charles should hand back the six Irish counties on his visit to Northern Ireland – No war! Just words! It’s time.”

They followed this up with more Tweets across the weekend as the Dublin singers called for users to reflect on the history of Ireland and its complicated relationship with the British monarchy.

They wrote: “FYI we’re Irish the country that has been oppressed historically by the monarchy! Please study your history! We haven’t said anything but the facts!”

However, their words sparked a mixed reaction online, with the pair revealing some people were so incensed by their tweets they’ve sent death threats to the brothers.

The Twitter threats come after Jedward were previously slammed for writing ‘insensitive’ tweets about the Queen’s final public engagement with new Prime Minister, Liz Truss.

Just hours before the Queen’s death was announced on Thursday 8 September but news of her failing health was made public, the duo wrote: “Liz truss must have done something on that visit to the Queen!”
