Jedward jump to Taylor Swift's defence after Damon Albarn songwriting row

Jedward have jumped to the defence of Taylor Swift after Damon Albarn claimed that she doesn't write her own songs.

A Twitter war broke out on Monday when a snippet of an interview with the Blur frontman was shared on the Los Angeles Times Twitter account.

The teaser read: "Albarn also spills his thoughts on some of today's chart-topping music artists. Billie Eilish? 'I think she’s exceptional'. Taylor Swift? 'She doesn’t write her own songs'."

Within an hour of the social media post, Taylor sensationally hit back at the claims to set the record straight.

The Grammy award-winning artist, 32, tweeted the English singer, 53, saying: "I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging.

"You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f***ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW."

The All Too Well hitmaker then sarcastically said: "PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering."

Damon responded shortly after and claimed his comments had been posted out of context, and apologised for the incident.

"I totally agree with you. I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait," he said.

"I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand. - Damon."

During the interview with the LA Times, the Gorillaz frontman said he "wasn't hating on anyone" when he claimed that Taylor doesn't write her own award winning lyrics.

When the journalist said that she ‘co-writes some' of her songs, Damon replied: “That doesn’t count.”

"I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing,” he added.

“I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes. Doesn’t mean that the outcome can’t be really great.”

Fans and musicians, including Irish singers Jedward, were not impressed by the encounter, and quickly weighed in on the debate.

In response to Damon’s apology, the Dubliners said: “Fake AF you said what you said! You are degrading. Hope you understand - Jedward.”

"Will go to his show tonight with a Taylor Swift poster his solo album is a complete Blur and should be titled full of skips," the duo also wrote to Taylor when the row kicked off on Monday night.

Elsewhere, other well known stars weighed in on the debate, whilst many fans watched on with disbelief over the whole encounter.

One quipped: “Never thought I’d see a spat between Damon Albarn & Taylor Swift escalated by Jedward.”

Another joked: “Favourite interaction of the day is by far Jedward jumping in to defend Taylor Swift.”
