Ross Gunnion admitted Jeanfield Swifts got what they deserved in Saturday’s Challenge Cup third round tie.
The Riverside men exited the competition at the third round stage to South of Scotland League side Lochar Thistle.
Swifts had taken the lead through Shaun Struthers but Kyle Braid levelled the scoreboard up before the break.
Lochar would secure their progression in the tournament thanks to a second half goal from Adam Jamieson.
“I think it’s fair to say everyone was disappointed with the result,” Swifts boss Gunnion told the PA.
“We failed to take the chances which were presented to us, and there were numerous clear cut ones.
“Combine that with mistakes at the other end and you get what you deserve in football.
“Lochar deserve a huge amount of credit as they hung in there at one nil down and got the breaks their hard work merited. We can have no complaints about them going away winners.
“We’re on a poor run at the moment and now we’ll need to see the character of the players come to the fore.”
Despite the 2-1 defeat, Gunnion was pleased with the performance of young forward Evan Wolecki.
Gunnion explained: “One bright spot from Saturday was definitely Evan Wolecki coming in and playing really well.
“He was unlucky not to score and if our finishing had been right he’d have had two or three assists with some fantastic crosses. He’s definitely going to be featuring more this season alongside Scott Logan who was also in the squad.”
