Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance made a widely ridiculed gaffe during a rally in Sparta, Michigan.
Toward the end of his address, during which he said, among other things, that Kamala Harris is bring America down a "path to slavery," Vance said he wanted to leave the audience with one final thought.
He then launched into how Harris's "open borders" will turn "every small town and big city in this country" into Springfield, Ohio, where unsubstantiated rumors about the Haitian community continue to spread.
"Over the last few years, 20,000 migrants, primarily from Haitia, have been dropped in Springfield, Ohio. And it's caused an incredible stress on nearly every local service," Vance said in a video shared by Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Social media users and late night talk show hosts were quick to pick up on Vance erroneously stating Haitians come from Haitia instead of Haiti.
X user @drdave1999 wrote, "Yes, JD Vance actually said that Haitians come from 'Haitia.' And, mind you, he's one of the more educated Republicans in Ohitio."

And, mind you, he's one of the more educated Republicans in Ohitio. https://t.co/RwElvXmHKH
Another user called the vice presidential hopeful "a moron" while sharing a clip from "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert." In it, Colbert joked, "That's right. Haitians come from Haitia much in the same way that lesbians come from Lesbia and Donald Trump comes from Dementia."
Wow JD Vance is a moron. He said Haitians come from Hattia pic.twitter.com/ptpkNlrFrH

One X user reminded followers of when Donald Trump recently said he was going to deport Haitians to Venezuela.
J.D. Vance thinks that Haitians come from "Haitia!" tRUMP thinks they come from Venezuela! Beam me up, Scotty! This is proof that all you have to be is White in AmeriKKKa! 🤦🏽♀️ pic.twitter.com/dDax9lw7SU

X user @GeigerNews said the mix-up is a window into the Republican presidential ticket's "geopolitical acumen."
Nothing says more about the geopolitical acumen of the Trump-Vance ticket than JD Vance thinking Haitians come from "Haitia." https://t.co/grDLabEXWe

Another shared the clip as evidence of Vance "continuing his hateful rhetoric."
Even after all of the shooting & bomb threats in Springfield, Ohio, JD Vance is still continuing his hateful rhetoric.

**Also, it's Haiti not Haitia. https://t.co/lCTR4eEq5Z
While many users continued making jokes at the senator's expense.
Hey, @JDVance where exactly is "Haitia?" https://t.co/BpxZUHioZ7

Um, @JDVance, can you point to "Haitia" on the map, please?

(It's also not 20,000, and they weren't "dropped" there. They moved there as legal immigrants because there were jobs that were going unfilled.) https://t.co/WpDbrDtkZ8
