Ohio Sen. JD Vance underwent a significant spiritual and political transformation following his 2019 conversion to Catholicism. This conversion provided him with a new perspective on societal issues, blending social and individual responsibility with moral considerations.

Vance aligned himself with a group of Catholic postliberals who advocate for a more muscular government that promotes their vision of the common good. While sharing some traditional Catholic conservative views like opposition to abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, postliberals diverge by advocating for a more interventionist government approach.

Despite his association with Catholic postliberals, Vance has not fully embraced all their beliefs, particularly those of integralists who seek a closer relationship between the state and the Catholic Church.

Vance's political stances have evolved, as seen in his alignment with the Republican Party's shift away from nationwide abortion restrictions. He has emphasized the importance of allowing diverse moral views to shape public policy in a democratic society.

While Vance has drawn inspiration from Catholic postliberals, he maintains a diverse range of influences, including Trump-style populists and tech billionaire Peter Thiel.

It remains uncertain whether Catholic postliberals would hold prominent positions in a potential Trump-Vance administration, but their ideas center around reshaping institutions and promoting policies that align with their vision of the common good.

Vance's journey into Catholicism began in a family environment with limited religious exposure, eventually leading him to embrace the teachings of his grandmother and explore different Christian denominations before finding spiritual fulfillment in Catholicism.
