JD Vance’s family will not receive a pre-inaugural tour of the vice president’s residence, as sources familiar with the senator’s plans revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris has not extended an invitation. The lack of communication between Harris and Vance dates back to the November 2024 presidential election, with Vance's adviser confirming that the two have not spoken since then. Notably, Harris did reach out to President-elect Donald Trump to concede the race following his victory.
During the campaign, Vance made derogatory remarks about Harris, referring to her as “trash” and joining Trump in attacking her racial identity. CBS initially reported the absence of an invite to the vice president’s residence, situated on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory near the White House.
Despite the lack of a formal invitation, Vance's family engaged in a call with the Navy facilities team in late December to discuss the logistics of moving into the Residence. This proactive step aimed to familiarize the Vances with the layout and practicalities of their new living space.
Historically, Harris herself did not visit the Naval Observatory before assuming the vice presidency in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In contrast, past transitions have seen cordial interactions between outgoing and incoming vice presidents.
For instance, in November 2016, then-Vice President Joe Biden met with Vice President-elect Mike Pence at the Naval Observatory for a two-hour discussion. Similarly, in 2008, then-Vice President Dick Cheney welcomed Biden to the vice president’s residence, spending nearly an hour together.
