Ohio Sen. JD Vance has been formally nominated as Donald Trump’s vice president by acclamation. The nomination took place at the Republican National Convention where Trump officially became the GOP’s presidential nominee earlier on Monday during the roll call.
When nominating a vice president, the candidate's name is placed into the nomination and seconded. Traditionally, a vice presidential candidate is nominated by acclamation, which is a voice vote, to avoid a potentially time-consuming roll call vote. This practice has been followed by both parties since 1988.
Both the presidential and vice presidential nominees are expected to deliver an acceptance speech at some point during the convention. Vance, a venture capitalist and the author of the best-selling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” was elected to the Senate in 2022 after receiving support from Trump in a competitive Republican primary.
