Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance has called for former President Donald Trump to receive a higher level of Secret Service protection, similar to that of President Joe Biden, following a second apparent assassination attempt against Trump.
Vance expressed his belief that the current level of protection for Trump is inadequate given the unique challenges he faces. He stated that while it may be appropriate for most former presidents, it falls short in Trump's case.
During a speech in Sparta, Michigan, Vance emphasized the need to enhance Trump's security detail, noting that it is a policy decision by the federal government. He mentioned conversations with allies in Congress who are working to allocate additional funds for Trump's security.
Although Vance indicated that he was not aware of any specific request from Trump for increased protection, he mentioned that Trump had expressed the need for more security personnel during a recent conversation with President Biden.
Despite his call for heightened security for Trump, Vance clarified that he has not personally requested additional Secret Service protection for himself, stating that he is satisfied with the current level of security provided by the agency.
Trump's request for increased security comes in the wake of a reported assassination attempt against him, highlighting concerns about the safety of the former president and the need for enhanced protection measures.
