JD Davison, Brodric Thomas reportedly to compete for full 2022-23 roster slot with Boston Celtics

Las Vegas Summer League and training camp will look particularly large for the Boston Celtics‘ 2022 draft pick JD Davison and 2021-22 two way guard Brodric Thomas, with the duo likely competing for a regular-season spot on the team’s 2022-23 roster.

Per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, Davison “will formalize a two-way deal with the Celtics soon” but “are expected to compete for a full roster spot” before the start of next season. Either way, whichever of the duo ended up with that spot would likely see most of their floor time with the Maine Celtics (Boston’s Portland-based G League affiliate) given where each is in their respective developmental path.

The trade that shipped out Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stauskas, Juwan Morgan, and Malik Fitts for Malcolm Brogdon opened up several roster spots in need of filling.

Boston will add at least two more players to their team with 11 currently under contract plus the noted full roster slot for Davison or Thomas to get to the league-mandated 14 regular contracts.

They could also go for a 15th player if the right value comes along, but if the team wants to remain flexible (and cheaper, considering their substantial extant tax bill), particularly if they believe in their two way players to add spot minutes in a pinch.
