Jay Slater's funeral 'targeted by scammers and trolls claiming to offer livestream access'

Heartless scammers have targeted Jay Slater’s funeral by claiming to offer a livestream in return for money.

The body of the 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire was returned to the UK last week after dying in a fall while in a remote area of Tenerife on June 17.

His bereaved family and friends will hold a “celebration of life” on August 10 for the apprentice bricklayer, with mourners asked to wear something blue in his memory.

But sick scammers have attempted to make money out of the tragic teen’s funeral online, by pretending to offer a livestream.

Matthew Searle, head of LBT Global, the overseas crisis support charity which assisted the family throughout their ordeal, said that the charity was being “inundated” with reports of the scams.

“As fast as we can get the platforms to remove them, more appear," he said.

He added: "To be completely clear - there is no livestream of Jay's funeral, and anyone claiming to offer one is a scam.

"As much as being hurtful and deeply unrespectful, this is taking vital donations away from a small charity.

"We ask that anyone seeing one of these pages reports it to the platform. Please don't follow them or send them money.

"It is so typical of the vile trolling this family have received for them to target something so special as a funeral."

Mr Slater's loved ones have asked, if instead of flowers, people could donate to LBT Global.

Mr Slater attended the NRG music festival with two friends before his disappearance, and his last known location was the Rural de Teno Park in the north of the Canary Island, which was about an 11-hour walk from his accommodation.

He had travelled to an Airbnb in Masca after a night out but the two men said to have rented the property were later ruled "not relevant" to the case.

The Spanish Civil Guard said Mr Slater could have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was discovered.
