Jay Johnson slams Republicans for cynically refusing border security bill

Former president sought border bill

Former Secretary of Homeland Security under the Obama administration, Jay Johnson, has expressed support for a border bill negotiated by Senators James Lankford and Chris Murphy. In a recent interview, Johnson highlighted the various provisions of the bill that he believes make it the most pro-border security legislation in modern times.

One crucial aspect of the bill, according to Johnson, is its focus on comprehensive immigration reform. He stated that the bill offers something for both the right and the left, including opportunities for a path to citizenship and addressing the situation of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients. However, he emphasized that the bill's primary objective is to enhance border security measures.

Johnson pointed out one flaw in the current asylum system, where the bar for establishing credible fear is set too low during the initial application process. This leads to a lengthy period before a final decision is made, during which time migrants can remain in the country even if their claims are not valid. The proposed bill seeks to expedite the asylum process, ensuring that credible fear is more appropriately assessed upfront.

Additionally, the negotiated compromises in the bill would grant the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) emergency authority, allowing for the swift deportation of individuals once a specific threshold has been reached. It also aims to restrict the secretary's ability to parole individuals into the country, a measure that Johnson acknowledged the administration might not fully support. The bill proposes an increase in resources, such as more judges and border patrol agents, to strengthen border security.

Johnson further highlighted the relevance of the bill in addressing the issue of fentanyl smuggling across the border. He clarified that the majority of fentanyl enters the country through established border crossing points. Nevertheless, he emphasized the need for a deal that could slow down the drug's flow, given its devastating impact on communities throughout the country.

Expressing frustration, Johnson criticized House Republicans who appear more interested in complaining about the problem than actively seeking solutions. He questioned why anyone interested in genuine border security would not embrace this bill, which provides an opportunity to address key issues and enhance national security. He also expressed disappointment in former President Trump, who he believed was more focused on using the issue as a campaign topic than genuinely solving the problem.

In conclusion, Johnson urged politicians to seize the opportunity to pass the border bill and not delay action until after the upcoming elections. He called for a focus on saving lives and addressing national security threats, urging everybody to prioritize the matter over political considerations.
