Jasprit Bumrah likely to be vice-captain for Asia Cup, squad announcement on Aug 21

MUMBAI: The Ajit Agarkar-chaired senior men’s selection committee will have an all-important meeting

in New Delhi on Monday afternoon to pick India’s squad for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, and Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be named the new vice-captain of the team.

Interestingly, both head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma will attend the meeting. While Dravid will be physically present in Delhi, Rohit is likely to join via video-conferencing from Mumbai.

Also joining the meeting virtually will be national selector SS Das, who is currently in Ireland with the Indian team.

The ICC deadline for picking the squad for the World Cup is September 5. For now, the selectors are likely to only pick the squad for the Asia Cup, but this bunch is likely to play the World Cup as well.

There is a possibility that Agarkar may even talk to the media post the meeting — the BCCI hasn’t

organized a press conference with the chief selector since Chetan Sharma quit the post in February.

It will also be interesting to see if India’s selectors pick a 15 or 17-member squad. Unlike the World Cup, Asia Cup rules permit a 17-member squad.

“Bangladesh and Pakistan have picked 17-member squads but they are travelling between Pakistan and Sri Lanka unlike India,” said a source.
