A release date has now been announced for the upcoming Minecraft film which will star Jason Momoa: Warner Bros’ Minecraft film is set to be released on April 4, 2025.
It’s a collaboration that no one saw coming, with fans joking, “Never thought that Minecraft and Jason Momoa would be used in a sentence together like this,” and, “Live-Action Minecraft movie with Jason Momoa was not on my bingo card for 2025,” on Twitter.
Nevertheless, people, on the whole, are delighted about the casting, with one fan saying: “I’m fairly sure I’ve made this joke before, but I do think Momoa is brilliant casting for the Minecraft movie. If there is anyone who I could believe could punch the entire world into conveniently stackable square blocks, it’d be Jason Momoa.”
Momoa was announced as part of the cast all the way back in April 2022, but today there’s still no news about the role that he will play in the upcoming film, nor about the plot of the video game adaptation.
Jared Hess, the filmmaker who made Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Nacho Libre (2006), is attached to the project as director. Further details about the cast and production team are still being kept under wraps.
The film has apparently been in the works for a decade. At different points directors Rob McElhenney (Mythic Quest) and Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) were attached to the project, as were writers Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) and Allison Schroeder (Frozen II). It has not yet been confirmed who will be the writer of the current version of the film.
Minecraft is a video game by Mojang Studios in which the world and the characters are all made of blocks. Players get to build worlds and also play characters inside those worlds, with the goal simply of creating and, if they opt for the mode, surviving. The game, which was released in November 2011, is the best-selling video game of all time, with 63 more million sales than Grand Theft Auto V, which comes in second place.
Momoa has been incredibly busy as of late. Not only is he starring in Fast & Furious 10 (aka Fast X), which will be released in May and in the highly-anticipated Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set to be released in December, but he is set to have role in Fast & Furious 11 and in the upcoming Apple TV+ historical drama series Chief of War.
