Jason Donovan has made the surprising admission that he didn't think one of his biggest hits would be a success.
The Australian singer, 55, was hot property as he launched his pop career in the 90s off the back of his success on soap Neighbours.
In 1991, he was cast in the title role in the West End revival of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at the London Palladium and tasked with recording Any Dream Will Do as a single.
Donovan had his reservations, with one review from Smash Hits magazine even declaring: "Any quest Jason had for credibility has been flung out the window".The song, however, went on to top the UK charts for two weeks and within a month, was certified Gold after selling more than 400,000 copies.
Speaking to The Standard, Donovan explained: "Musical theatre has been very good to me, it's not something I set out to do, it sort of found me. Joseph was a baptism of fire. I guess I really started at the top there.
"I was asked to record Any Dream Will Do and even with the show its self, I didn't anticipate it to be the success it was. When I listened to Any Dream Will Do, everyone said 'this is a number one record' and I just couldn't believe it and I was proven wrong.
"To this day, you go and do festivals across the UK in the summer and Rewinds and all of those nostalgia festivals and you can be up there with the likes of Peter Hook from New Order and Go West and you put on Any Dream Will Do and something happens, it's a funny one.
"It's one of those sort of simple tunes that I think ignites the childhood theatrical experience in most people, particularly in this country."
Sadly, people don't sing "ah ah" at him in the street, the most common line he says is "I Close My Eyes".
"There's always a response to that tune. It's one of those classics and I'm very lucky to have been married to it for so long," he added.
Fans will get the chance to hear him perform the song live when he hits the road next year for a massive UK tour taking in 30 dates across the country.
The Nothing Can Divide Us hit-maker will kick off his Doin' Fine 25 Tour in February 2025, including stops at Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Birmingham.
He will even be returning to the London Palladium for one night only on March 3.
