Cummings, who played for Forest between 2017 and 2019, tagged Messi in a personal message on his Instagram page ahead of the final between Argentina and France.

Messi has the chance to win the World Cup for the first time, a feat that would strengthen his case in the famous Messi or Ronaldo debate across the globe. Former Reds man Cummings has sent the perfect advice to Messi with the ultimate pre-World Cup final pep talk.

Messi went on to score the first goal of the game - with Argentina 2-0 up at the time of writing - and Cummings will have been hoping his words at the forefront of his mind before striding up to roll home the penalty kick.

Posting a picture of himself talking into Messi's ear after a game between Argentina and Australia, Cummings added the caption: "Do the basics right Leo. Don’t play the occasion, play the game. All the best, Cumdog."

Aston Villa duo Matty Cash and John McGinn were among the famous names to react with laughing emojis in the comments, with former Derby striker Martyn Waghorn and Sheffield United's Oli McBurnie also getting involved.
