Jarrow pub forced to close after fire breaks out in industrial bins

A popular South Tyneside pub has been forced to close after a fire broke out over the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at the Lord Nelson pub in Monkton Village, Jarrow, on Saturday afternoon

T yne and Wear Fire and Rescue sent two fire engines to the scene and said that the fire had broken out in the industrial bins.

A notice on the pub's website said that it will be closed for one week for refurbishment following the fire. The Lord Nelson will reopen on February 7.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We can confirm that on Saturday afternoon (29th January), we were called to an incident at the Lord Nelson pub in Monkton Village, Jarrow.

"Our fire control took the call at 3:20pm and two appliances from Hebburn Community Fire Station and one from South Shields Community Fire Station were on the scene in just five minutes to extinguish a fire in the industrial bins.

"Our crews left the scene at 4:12pm”

Station Manager for Hebburn and South Shields, Trevor Sturrock, said: “What a great response from the crews to be on scene in just five minutes and get the fire under control at the Lord Nelson Pub in Monkton Village.

“This weekend was a busy one but as always our firefighters and fire control worked fantastically to keep you all safe.”

Representatives for The Lord Nelson also released a statement to Facebook.

They said: "Just to confirm there has been a small fire at the side of the building. All team are fine and well as is the business.

'There will be some small cosmetic works to be completed next week

'Thank you for all your support and well wishes."
