Jarrod O’Connor took heart from Leeds Rhinos’ defensive display against Catalans Dragons – but admits their attacking endeavours fell short during the 10-4 defeat.
Richard Agar’s men slumped to a third successive Super League loss on Thursday night as their poor start to the season continued.
No side has ever reached the Grand Final having lost their opening three games and the combination between new half-backs Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer has yet to fully ignite.
O’Connor made his first appearance of the season against Steve McNamara’s side and was delighted to get out on the field.
But, after Austin scored the Rhinos’ only try, O’Connor said his side must capitalise better on good-ball sets.
The 20-year-old loose forward told Rugby League Live: “Defensively, we were stronger than we were last week against Wigan.
“We were pinning Catalans in their corners, but I think we had too many attacking sets on their line where we just didn’t score the points.
“That cost us in the end, but on a personal note it felt good to get out there again.
“I just want to start getting some consistent game-time and getting in that team every week.
“Certainly playing my first game of the season against one of the toughest teams in the league is only going to benefit me.”
Next Thursday’s trip to Belle Vue has taken on added importance for Agar’s side but O’Connor believes Austin and Sezer will soon be firing on all cylinders.
He said: “They have been away from each other for a while following their time at Canberra.
“They are still getting used to our team and our plays here at Leeds, but there is no point panicking yet.
“When we string a few wins together, I’m sure we will be fine.”
