Jarrod Bowen is targeting a place in England’s World Cup squad as he looks to carry his form into the new season.
The winger scored 12 goals and provided 17 assists in the Premier League last campaign, starring for West Ham as David Moyes’ side enjoyed another memorable season.
That earned Bowen an England call-up for the Nations League fixtures at the end of the season, making his debut against Hungary before featuring against Germany and Italy.
Speaking to West Ham’s official website, the 25-year-old reflected on his international involvement and is now focused on earning his ticket to Qatar later this year.
“I went there not really knowing what to expect and of course you’re there on merit but you never know if you’re going to play any minutes,” Bowen said.
“So for me to play a part in every single game and get four caps for my country has topped off a perfect season.
“The summer for me was the best one I’ve had so far, I enjoyed every minute of it, and now it’s about working hard and getting into the squad in September and then there’s a World Cup at the end of the year.”
Bowen played 62 minutes against Reading as West Ham continued their pre-season preparations, with matches against Rangers, Luton and Lens to come before they host Manchester City on August 7 to get their Premier League season up and running.
It’s just over a month since Bowen played in England’s 4-0 defeat to Hungary, a short turnaround that has meant the winger arrived for the start of pre-season with his fitness levels still high.
“It’s been a different pre-season to normal as I’ve come in with weeks with England under my belt,” Bowen told the club’s official website.
“It’s such a long season, going away with England at the end, so you kind of need that down time. You don’t lose too much fitness but you have to keep yourself in top condition when you’re off as well to hit the ground running.
“That’s my main focus for pre-season, to start the season how I finished the last one.”
