Jared Verse overtook Quinyon Mitchell as the heavy favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year

Jared Verse was the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year for most of the season, quickly rising up the board after being behind Dallas Turner and Laiatu Latu to start the season. However, leading up to Week 16, he was overtaken by Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, the first time Verse wasn’t the favorite since Week 2.

Though Verse didn’t stand out significantly in Sunday’s win over the Jets, he’s back to being the heavy favorite to win the award. According to BetMGM, Verse is now -500 to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year, ahead of Mitchell (+400) by a sizable margin.

Those odds give Verse an implied probability of 83.3% to win the award, while Mitchell’s are only 20%.

Despite Verse’s somewhat pedestrian outing against the Jets, Mitchell had a little bit of a tough day against the Commanders in Week 16. He gave up a long touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin, the first he’s allowed all year, and surrendered 47 yards in coverage – his third-highest total of the season.

Verse hasn’t locked up the award just yet, but he’s gone from +135 to -500 in a span of a week so he’s inching closer to winning the coveted trophy with just two games remaining.
