Jared Goff continues to run the Detroit Lions offense capably, helping to guide the team to three straight wins. The veteran isn’t exactly the reason the Lions are winning those games, however.
When given time in the pocket, Goff remains effective. He’s made some strong throws and his willingness to challenge down the field has returned after a midseason absence. But when he’s under pressure, Goff isn’t even close to an average quarterback.
Per data from SIS and The 33rd Team, Goff ranks 31st out of 37 quarterbacks (min. 200 snaps) in completion percentage under pressure. Goff completes just 43.4 percent of his passes while under pressure. He’s 30th in QB Rating under pressure at 52.6.
The decline from Goff’s performance when he’s not under pressure is precipitous. Overall, Goff completes 63.9 percent of his passes and his QB Rating is 92.8. Those figures rank 22nd and 12th, respectively.
Detroit has invested heavily in the offensive line to beef up the protection, with pretty strong results. Injuries to the receiving corps have no doubt contributed to some of Goff’s issues, but it’s hard to ignore the stats or the film when Goff gets pressured.
