The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots Japanese organization of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for their relentless efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended the group for their witness testimony, emphasizing the crucial message that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

Nihon Hidankyo, also known as Hibakusha, was established by survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. These survivors have dedicated their lives to advocating for nuclear disarmament and raising awareness about the devastating impact of nuclear weapons.

The committee highlighted the invaluable role of the Hibakusha in conveying the unimaginable suffering caused by nuclear weapons, underscoring the urgent need for global nuclear disarmament.

Over the years, Nihon Hidankyo has collected thousands of witness accounts and actively participates in international forums such as the United Nations to advocate for nuclear disarmament. The organization's tireless efforts have been instrumental in keeping the nuclear taboo alive, contributing to a peaceful future for humanity.

Despite the progress made in nuclear disarmament, the committee acknowledged the ongoing challenges, citing the modernization of nuclear arsenals by several countries. The current global nuclear stockpile stands at approximately 12,121 warheads, with concerns about the increasing number of operational nuclear weapons.

The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo comes at a critical juncture when nuclear threats are on the rise, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions. The organization's call for disarmament serves as a poignant reminder of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare and the imperative of global cooperation to prevent such a scenario.

As the world grapples with evolving security threats and technological advancements in warfare, the message of nuclear disarmament championed by Nihon Hidankyo resonates as a vital pillar of peace and security for future generations.
