A selection of 12 Japanese movies will be presented during "Japanese Film Festival 2022", which will take place at House Samyan in Samyan Mitrtown, Rama IV Road, from tomorrow to Feb 13, and SFX Cinema Maya in Chiang Mai from Feb 25-27.
Held by the Japan Foundation with the support of the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Association, the film festival will bring nine movies to Bangkok and seven to Chiang Mai (four films overlap with those in Bangkok).
Among the highlights for the Bangkok screenings will be Under The Open Sky, a multi-award winning film based on Mibuncho, a novel by Naoki Prize-winning author Saki Ryuzo. Directed by Nishikawa Miwa, the crime movie revolves around a former yakuza who struggles to reintegrate into society after serving 13 years in jail.
Premiering in the festival before its commercial release will be Moonlight Shadow by Malaysian director Edmund Yeo. The drama follows the story of a girl who has been unable to cope with the sudden loss of her boyfriend and keeps thinking about the moonlight shadow phenomenon -- a mysterious event that allows a person to meet the dead at the end of a Full Moon.
Another outstanding movie is Poupelle Of Chimney Town, an animation about a young boy who yearns to see the stars beyond the thick smoke of his isolated town. One day, he meets Poupelle and their adventure begins.
The other six movies in the line-up include Wheel Of Fortune and Fantasy directed by Hamaguchi Rhusuke; My Blood And Bones In A Flowing Galaxy by Sabu; Liar X Liar by Yakumo Saiji; It's A Summer Film! by Matsumoto Soushi; Masked Ward by Kimura Hisashi; and Mio's Cookbook by Kadokawa Haruki.
All films have both English and Thai subtitles. Tickets cost 160 baht (140 baht for House members and 120 baht for students) and can be purchased from the box office and housesamyan.com.
The festival will also be running online from Feb 14-27. Free screenings will be available from watch.jff.jpf.go.jp.
