YAMAGUCHI -- Japan's longest bamboo roller coaster is scheduled to open in September in Yamaguchi.

Members of the media were shown the roller coaster on Friday inside the venue of the Yamaguchi Yume Flower Expo, which is to be held at Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park.

The roller coaster will be located inside a "mountain play" zone that will cost extra to enter.

About 85 meters long and 3 meters wide, the roller coaster was built mainly by about 20 people, including members of the Yamaguchi Satoyama Network, a nonprofit organization involved in forest management.

About 600 bamboo and cedar posts were used to build the ride.

A ride in the roller coaster's four-person car involves a thrilling 8-meter drop.

"The toughest part was figuring out how to stop the roller coaster at the end. We want kids to enjoy playing outside using natural bamboo," said Mizuo Akagawa, 64, who is secretary general of the NPO.
