What's to come in the next hearings

There are up to six hearings left this month, and almost all of them focus on Donald Trump's involvement in the Capitol riots.

Vice chair Liz Cheney said the next hearing will show that Mr Trump knew he had lost the election and went on to engage in a "massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information".

Other hearings will focus on Mr Trump's effots to pressure his vice president Mike Pence to refuse to count electoral votes, and that he "summoned a violent mob" to the Capitol.

A number of witnesses will speak and new evidence is expected to be revealed in each hearing.

We're yet to see a full schedule but the next hearing will be some time next week.

'We saved our democracy', US Congresswoman says

An emotional U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal has spoken to Associated Press reporters about the hearing.

Video from the attack showed Ms Jayapal and other congress members crouching down and taking cover in the U.S. House chamber.

She said the hearing sent an important message.

"I want the American public to remember that despite the fact that we were on the floor, fearing for our lives, that we went back and we certified that election. And we certified Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the president and vice president of the United States. I want people to know that we saved our democracy," she said.

She also rejected the idea that the hearings are motivated by partisan politics.

"These are facts laid out by Bill Barr. These aren't partisan voices that are speaking out and saying 'we don't like Donald Trump.' This is his own White House counsel. His daughter, for Christ's sake. If somebody cannot look at this and put country over party, I don't know what to say."

Cheney: Trump willing to use 'conspiracy theories' to achieve results

Vice chair Liz Cheney said Donald Trump was "willing to entertain and use conspiracy theories to achieve his ends."

"They knew the president needed to be cut off from all of those who had encouraged him. They knew that President Donald Trump was too dangerous to be left alone, at least until he left office on Jan. 20," she said.

"Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone but your dishonor will remain."

Trump's 'efforts to pressure' Mike Pence will be the focus of  a later hearing

Vice chair Liz Cheney said said Donald Trump's efforts to pressure former vice president Mike Pence to refuse to count electoral votes will be detailed in a later hearing this month.

She said what Mr Trump demanded Mike Pence do was wrong, illegal and unconstitutional.

"Witnesses in these hearings will explain how the former Vice President and his staff informed President Trump over and over again that what he was pressuring Mike Pence to do was illegal," Ms Cheney said.

"As you will hear, President Trump engaged in a relentless effort to pressure Pence, both in private and in public."

"Vice President Pence demonstrated his loyalty to Donald Trump consistently over four years but he knew that he had a higher duty to the United States constitution."

Mr Pence has spoken publicly about this before.

"President Trump is wrong, I had no right to overturn the election. The Presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone. Frankly, there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American President," Mr Pence said.

Rioters were 'called' to Capitol by Trump

Before ending its nearly two hour hearing, the committee played video footage of rioters saying former President Donald Trump asked them to come to Washington on Janury 6.

"I was there because he called me there and he laid out what was happening," one rioter is heard saying.

Robert Schornak, another rioter, said what got him interested in going to the Capitol that day was Trump's request for his supporters to be there.

"You know, Trump only asked me for two things. He asked me for my vote. He asked me to come on January 6," Schornak said.

'Slipping in blood': Police officer describes the riot

US Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards was asked to recount her most vivid memory of the day.

"What I saw was just a war scene," Ms Edwards said.

"There were officers on the ground," she said. "I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in peoples' blood."

Ms Edwards was the first law enforcement officer injured as rioters began to charge inside the building, according to the committee.

Police officer describes riots as 'war scene'

Footage showed US Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards knocked over by forceful protesters when they ripped down a bike rack forcing her backwards onto a set of stairs.

She sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result.

"We started holding on, grabbing the bike racks, I wasn't under any pretence that I could hold it for very long but I wanted to make sure that we could get more [officers] down," she said.

"I felt the bike rack come on top of my head and I was pushed backwards and my foot caught the stair behind me and my chin hit the handrail.

"At that point I had blacked out but the back of my head clipped the concrete stairs behind me."

After she regained consciousness she returned to duty where she was injured again.

"After a while I got back on the line."

She said she was then sprayed in the eyes and tear gassed.

Ms Edwards described seeing the riots that day as a "war scene".

We are now hearing from witnesses

First up we have Nick Quested, who is a filmmaker who set out to document the rally.

Mr Quested was with the head of the Proud Boys, Henry "Enrique" Tarrio, the night before the attack where he filmed the meeting between Mr Tarrio and Oath Keepers leader Stuart Rhodes.

The next day he met up with the Proud Boys as they marched towards the Capitol.

"We met up with the Proud Boys somewhere near 10.30am," he said.

He said there was "a couple of hundred" Proud Boys marching towards the Capitol at that time.

He described the atmosphere as "much darker" than it had been at other rallies."

He says a tweet made my Donald Trump mobilised extremist groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers.

Mr Childress says the leaders of the two groups met the night before the attack.

Footage shown earlier revealed members of the Proud Boys were the first to break into the Capitol.

Testimony to reveal Trump said Mike Pence 'deserves' harm

Vice chair Liz Cheney said one of the hearings will include testimony that the former president "did not really want to put anything out calling off the riot or asking his supporters to leave".

"You will hear that President Trump was yelling and "really angry at advisors who told him he needed to be doing something more," Ms Cheney said.

"Aware of the rioters' chants to hang Mike Pence, the President responded with this sentiment 'Maybe our supporters have the right idea. Mike Pence deserves it'".

Rioters were 'motivated by Donald Trump', vice chair says

In vice chair Liz Cheney's opening address, she said the attack was "not a spontaneous riot".

"On the morning of January 6th, President Donald Trump's intention was to remain President of the United States, despite the lawful outcome of the 2020 election and in violation of his constitutional obligation to relinquish power," she said.

"Over multiple months, Donald Trump oversaw and coordinated a sophisticated 7-part plan to overturn the presidential election and prevent the transfer of presidential power."

She said Mr Trump engaged in a "massive effort" to spread false information.
