Jannik Sinner, the No. 1 tennis player in the world, has announced his withdrawal from the Olympics due to being diagnosed with tonsillitis. Sinner, 22, shared the news on Instagram, expressing his disappointment at not being able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. After experiencing illness following a week of clay training, Sinner consulted a doctor who advised against playing due to tonsillitis.
In June, Sinner made history by becoming the first Italian man to reach the world No. 1 ranking and winning the 2024 Australian Open. Missing the Olympics was a significant blow for Sinner, who had been looking forward to representing his country at the prestigious event.
Sending his best wishes to the Italian Olympians, Sinner stated that he would support them from home. He will now focus on resting and recovering to regain full health. Sinner was also set to compete in the men's doubles event alongside Lorenzo Musetti.
With Sinner's withdrawal, Novak Djokovic takes the top seed position, followed by Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz as the top-ranked American. Meanwhile, Andy Murray of Great Britain announced his retirement after the Paris tournament, expressing pride in representing Team GB for the final time.
Murray, 37, will participate in the men's singles and doubles competitions alongside Dan Evans. The draws for the tournaments will be revealed soon, with the matches set to begin on July 27.
