Janey Godley recalls mum's boyfriend axe attack on 40th anniversary of her death

Janey Godley has recalled seeing her late mum attacked by an axe-wielding ex-boyfriend on the 40th anniversary of her death.

The Scots comedian last saw Annie Currie on Mother's Day in 1982, some years after the attack took place.

She paid tribute to her mum at the weekend recalling the last time she saw her was on mothering Sunday, before her body was flung into the River Clyde by her ex-boyfriend 40 years ago today.

Janey again opened up to her followers by revealing she "screamed and froze" as she watched the same man, Peter, use an axe to threaten her mum in 1978.

She told her followers: "In 1978 I screamed and froze as I watched her boyfriend Peter attack her with an axe, she was so scared she defended him to cops, then 40 years ago today he finally killed her and left her lifeless body to drift for days in the River Clyde.

"I miss my mum - Annie Currie."

Janey has written before on medium.com that Annie was found face down in the River Clyde in 1982 after being missing for four days.

She said: "Her ex convict boyfriend took her there a walk and had been in court that year for trying to kill her but she defended him.

"He convinced the cops she 'fell in and it’s not illegal to not report an accident is it?' He said on that awful day we found her.

"She was scared of her boyfriend as he had served time in prison trying to kill another woman in the 70s.

"He walked free from her death only to go on and kill again and was finally found dead alone in a filthy flat in 1995."

The Scots comedian, who went viral in lockdown with her Nicola Sturgeon voiceover videos, said in a way she was 'strangely blessed' that her body was found soon after her disappearance.

She said: "Watching documentaries about women who went missing and years later their body is found, makes me feel strangely blessed that my mums body was found in River Clyde four days after she went missing, even though the guy that killed her escaped justice, I didn’t have to wait years."
