Jane McDonald chokes up at mention of partner and mum's death on The One Show

Jane McDonald became emotional during an appearance on The One Show as she discussed her late mother and long-term partner.

The singer and presenter had been in a relationship with partner Eddie Rothe for 13 years before he died of lung cancer in March 2021. They had initially dated in 1980 before rekindling their relationship in 2008.

The 59-year-old also sadly lost her mum, Jean, three years earlier in 2018.

The former Loose Women panellist was on the BBC show on Thursday night to promote her new travel show Holidaying with Jane McDonald when she became choked up.

The singer shared that she was overcome with emotion after helping to release baby turtles back to the sea, which she had named Ed and Jean after her partner and mum.

After watching a clip of the scene, presenter Ronan Keating asked: "That was quite a special moment for you?"

Jane replied: "I've just recently lost my partner and my mother at the same time." The star then choked up, adding: "Sorry my throat went there, always does when I talk about them."

Continuing to speak about the special moment with the turtles, she added: "I just thought this is new life... you've got to think at the end of something comes something beautiful in new life. It was quite an emotional bit for me."

Jane opened up about grieving for her partner with Kaye Adams on the How To Be 60 podcast.

"I can talk about him now and just feel great that I had that amazing time with him. And it’s funny, we should talk about retiring because he retired at 59," she said.

"And he said, 'I promise you when you get to this age, you’ll see a difference.' And I have. So, we had lots of plans."

She added: "I think that’s part of grief as well is that you go through the normal grief and the terrible, terrible time and then you grieve the life that you thought you were going to have."
