Jamie Webster shares advice in masterclass for college students

Liverpool singer-songwriter Jamie Webster spent the day at a city college to share his expertise with students.

Jamie, who has released two hit albums and become a firm favourite with Liverpool FC supporters, spent the day at the City of Liverpool College's Arts Centre delivering a songwriting masterclass to students.

Finding time despite his busy touring schedule, Jamie spoke to music students about his career so far and offered advice on how to write and develop their own songs. He answered questions from students on his musical influences, how his career started and his approach to songwriting.

He then set the students the challenge of writing and performing a song in one day. The students formed bands made up of instrumentalists, vocalists and producers and got to work on the task of coming up with a song of at least two minutes in length. Jamie worked with the newly-formed groups to offer support and advice.

Jamie said: "It was a no brainer. I have socialist ideologies so like to be able to give back and share my experiences." He talked to students about negative comments they may receive on social media and on how songwriting can be a release of emotion.

Jamie said: "For the many good comments there’s always 10 bad ones. I find songwriting a form of therapy. It’s about using your downs to make something good. I know people who write songs and keep them for themselves and that’s fine. I always say they’re better shared."

He added: "With music, sometimes less is more - being able to immerse yourself into the song. Being ready and feeling confident to perform." All in a day and starting from scratch, the students managed to write a song and go some way to making it "chart-ready."

Student Marco Morgan Castro said: "It’s good that we have been given the space and time to listen to someone who is proven in the industry. Someone who makes a living from their music.

"Listening to Jamie talk about the start of his career, and the advice he had for us on starting ours was really helpful."

Brooke Chimupeni said: "It was good to try something we had never done before, working with people who we wouldn’t ordinarily have worked with."

The day ended with the group performing their material to Jamie.
