Jamie Redknapp praises Chelsea's missed £45m Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer upgrade

Jamie Redknapp believes Chelsea may have missed out on a £45million Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 'upgrade' as Todd Boehly is reminded of a possible transfer mistake.

The Blues are on the hunt for a new striker before the September 1 deadline and Thomas Tuchel, in particular, seems keen on Barcelona's Aubameyang. football.london understands that Chelsea are 'very confident' in agreeing a move totalling £22m, with there currently being a £4m gap in valuations between the two sides.

The Athletic have reported that the current World Champions' attempt to offer Marcos Alonso in a potential cash-plus-player trade deal has fallen on deaf ears. The Blaugrana want cold, hard cash as they face a real battle to register Jules Kounde before a certain clause in the new signings contract comes into play. Chelsea can potentially walk away from Aubameyang but at this stage of the transfer window, it could be boom or bust in this scenario, with little time left to seek out alternatives.

One alternative that Chelsea missed out on earlier in this summer's transfer window was Arsenal's new recruit, Gabriel Jesus. £45m is already seeming a bargain for a player who has started 2022/23 on red hot form.

His goal and performance in the Florida Cup pre-season friendly between the two London clubs provided the first sign of the missed opportunity Chelsea had to potentially complete a double Man City swoop for Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Since then though, and into the new 2022/23 season itself, Arsenal's new No. 9 continues to look like the signing of the summer. He has already attained three goal involvements in this season's Premier League after his assist for Martin Odegaard's second on the South Coast against Bournemouth. Jesus also had a second-half goal chalked off by VAR, to the dismay of all the FPL fantasy users who would have captained him for this one.

During the half-time analysis, as well as waxing lyrical on the player in question, Redknapp has inadvertently made his choice up already on who will be the better of the two deals- Jesus for Arsenal or Aubameyang for Chelsea.

"He’s electric, for your striker to be such a focal point and come into make an impact that’s exactly what he’s done," he said during Sky Sports' coverage of Arsenal and Bournemouth on the Saturday Night Football.

"The strength that he shows is phenomenal. He’s like an electric eel, he’s so quick and strong. He’s transformed the team, it’s such an upgrade from Lacazette and Aubameyang, he just gives them something different. He’s been a brilliant signing."
