Jamie Redknapp gives Frenkie de Jong verdict while making Erling Haaland comparison

Jamie Redknapp has told Manchester United that they would be getting one of the best midfielders in the world if they are able to sign Frenkie de Jong and has compared him to Erling Haaland.

United’s pursuit of the Dutch midfielder has been one of the worst kept secrets in football, with the Reds and new manager Erik ten Hag having identified him as an ideal target as he begins his rebuild.

Supporters have had to remain patient, with the club having been in discussion with Barcelona for two months now, and rumours continue to swirl with the momentum seeming to shift each day towards whether he'll stay in Spain or join United. However, reports today suggest a deal has been agreed between the two clubs.

Redknapp is a big fan of De Jong's after comparing him to Luka Modric back in 2019, and has told United fans that they would be getting a top three midfielder in world football if they're able to get the deal done.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: "I think he's a top two or three midfielder in the world - he would be an unbelievable signing. He went to Barcelona and it hasn't worked out for a number of reasons. But it doesn't mean he's not an incredible player.

"Having worked in that system at Ajax (under Ten Hag), he will play in front of the back four and make things happen. He'll drive with the ball, so creative with his passing and he has pace as well. I am excited about him for the Premier League.

"I feel like him and Erling Haaland are two of the best signings for the league in a long time.

"Manchester United should be really happy when they get him - he's a tremendous player. I am really impressed with him and it's a great signing for Man Utd."
