Jamie Redknapp gets his own back after X-rated chant from Man Utd fans

Manchester United fans were keen to remind Jamie Redknapp of his Liverpool roots on Thursday night - and the former midfielder saw the funny side at Old Trafford.

Redknapp spent 11 years at Anfield and the former club captain remains a popular figure there, despite the tail-end of his stint being plagued by a serious knee injury. Short stints at Spurs and Southampton followed, before the now retired 49-year-old moved into punditry work with Sky Sports.

And he was on duty as Erik ten Hag's men secured Champions League football with a commanding 4-1 win over Chelsea. The result came at the expense of his former club, with Liverpool now forced to settle for a Europa League spot.

The Red Devils were well in command by half time as they led 2-0 through goals from Casemiro and Anthony Martial, and the home crowd were in good voice during the half time interval as Redknapp and co analysed the action. And it was the ex-England international who was duly serenaded with some x-rated lyrics.

"Jamie Redknapp you're a w****r, you're a w****r," reverberated round the stadium. To the credit of Redknapp, he was visibly amused by the taunts, with co-pundit and former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also laughing out loud.

And after United had secured a 4-1 win, with a Bruno Fernandes penalty and Marcus Rashford goal completing a routine win, Redknapp responded to the Old Trafford faithful. Analysing a sublime no look pass from Casemiro, he made a reference designed to rile the Red Devils.

Redknapp labelled it a "Roberto Firmino pass" in reference to the departing Liverpool striker. Sky Sports host Kelly Cates noted the comparison, saying: "They won't like that here, to which he said: "I don't care, I've taken enough stick tonight."

And the way Redknapp handled matters was praised by fans after the clip went viral on Twitter, with one saying: "He took it pretty well to be fair. And I don’t think Hasselbaink has ever had as much fun." Another was more interested in the composure of the host though, asking: " @KellyCates How on earth did you manage to hold it together?" while a third lauded the exchange, adding: "How can’t you love football?"

But the Bournemouth youth graduate also addressed a more serious matter, urging Harry Kane to leave Spurs and head to United before it's too late : “It's the facts, it feels Spurs are a shambles, if you are Harry Kane with one year to go this is the time to leave he has to push now." he said. "United they might get someone, he missed Man City a few years ago, right now he needs to push with one year on contract to go somewhere.”
