Jamie McKim says signing new Johnstone Burgh deal was a no-brainer as boss targets top flight spot

Jamie McKim insists it was a straightforward decision to commit his future to Johnstone Burgh.

And now the ambitious boss is targeting even more success as he aims to steer the Keanie Park club to a second successive promotion this season.

McKim and his assistant David Hill recently put pen to paper on a new contract that sees them tied to the club until the summer of 2024.

Having gained promotion to the WoSFL First Division last season, the in-form Renfrewshire side are currently in the mix to bag a spot in the top flight.

While McKim can’t believe how far Burgh have come in such a short space of time, that won’t stop him targeting another impressive jump up in status this year.

He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It was a very easy decision to sign the contract. We’re progressing, we’re an ambitious club and we’ve grown a huge amount. The last 18 months we’ve progressed more than I ever imagined we could.

“The contract wasn’t something we were actively looking for, it’s more about the club being more professional as we look to keep moving forward.

“I’m happy to be here as long as we stay ambitious. I can see that being the case for a long time.

“We want to take the club as far as we can. We’ll have the same approach as last year, taking it one game at a time and seeing where it takes us.

“Everything is possible for us this season. It’s all down to how we apply ourselves. You look at the league and it’s still so tight. You could be challenging for promotion or battling relegation in the space of a few games.

“I’m so confident in this group of boys. We’ve got all the talent so as long as we keep working hard we can achieve whatever we want this season.”

After a strong spell of form that saw Burgh jump up to fifth in the league, McKim’s men have had to sit the last two weekends out after seeing clashes against Blantyre Vics and Gartcairn postponed.

They’re finally back in the thick of the action this Saturday, taking on bottom-of-the-table Whitletts Vics at Keanie Park. And McKim is confident his side can pick up where they left off and keep their promotion hopes afloat.

He said: “We’ve got Whitletts this weekend and our full focus is on getting back into action. The boys are itching to play again and we’d been on a very decent run before these call-offs. We’d won five of seven and we want to try and extend that.

“You want the momentum kept going so the games being off hasn’t helped. But saying that the boys are flying in training and I’m confident we’ll hit the ground running again.

“We changed a few players and staff around in January and I think that’s really paid off. It’s brought us all that wee bit closer. We’re such a tight unit now.”
