Jamie McGrath set for Dundee United transfer as in-demand winger leaves Aberdeen wanting

Dundee United are set to land Jamie McGrath as the club secure a massive boost with the countdown on for their crucial Europa Conference League qualifier.

Jack Ross ’s men are close to completing the capture of the Wigan Athletic midfielder on-loan for the rest of the season with a deal expected to be finalised within the next 24 hours. That could see McGrath could go into their squad for Thursday night’s first leg with AZ Alkmaar at Tannadice as the club look to make the group stage of the Conference League.

The Republic of Ireland international was Ross’s top target this summer and the club pushed all the way to get him, even when it looked like McGrath would be heading elsewhere. The former Hibs boss came close to signing McGrath when he was at Easter Road but they failed to get the other half of the swap deal agreed with St Mirren before the window slammed shut on deadline day.

The Dundee United boss has kept in contact with McGrath and that has been a major factor in lining up this deal. Sporting director Tony Asghar has fought off stiff competition from Aberdeen to bring the midfielder to the City of Discovery.

Ross has been after McGrath since he arrived at Tannadice but Wigan only gave the green light for him to leave at the end of last week. McGrath was previously a standout in his last spell in the Premiership with St Mirren before he moved south in January this year.

The 25-year-old has found first-team football hard to come by with the Latics. Their promotion to the Championship has prompted them to sanction this loan deal.
